Senses
For our senses unit, students learned about the four different flavors: bitter, sweet, salty and sour. Students were give hands-on opportunities to investigate each flavor. After the taste testing was complete, students recorded the food tasted and whether they liked the flavor or did not like the flavor.
Butterfly life cycle
Students observed the butterfly life cycle in class. Observations and predictions were made and discussions were had with each passing phase of the life cycle. It was a great joy for the classroom!
Weather
To kick off our weather unit, we learned about clouds. During the class demonstration below, students learn about how clouds hold and retain water, and how when water molecules becomes too heavy, rain falls. The demonstration was done with a classic kitchen sponge and bowl of water. Our class not only greatly enjoyed the demonstration, but also were able to have a more concrete understanding of how this part of the water cycle works.
Continuing on with our weather unit, we explored how the sun controls our weather. Students investigated a variety of area's temperature, based on whether that area was in the sun or not. Students conclude that some materials warmed up in the sun, while others did not. Students then put ice in two cups, and placed one cup in the sun, and one in the shade. They made predictions to see which cup of ice would melt more.
